What is the difference between kraft paper and kraft self-adhesive stock?
One is packaging material, the other is label laminate. Can you print colour on brown kraft label paper?
You can, with the brown working against you. The face is uncoated and mid-toned, so ink sinks in and colours read muted and warmer than they do on white. Light artwork generally needs an opaque white base, foil or screen printing to stand off the ground. Single-colour black, brown-on-brown and foil are the treatments that suit the stock best.
Is kraft self-adhesive paper water-resistant?
No. It is an uncoated paper face, so it takes up moisture, darkens and tears when wet, and print can lift. It suits dry retail and shelf environments. Where a bottle sweats, a jar goes into a fridge or the pack is handled wet, a film face — PVC or vinyl — is the correct choice, or the label needs a varnish or laminate over the kraft.
Is kraft label stock recyclable or compostable?
An uncoated paper face recycles more readily than a film one, which is the genuine environmental argument for it. Compostable is a different and stricter claim: it depends on the adhesive and the liner as much as the face, and it holds only where the whole construction is certified for it. Do not treat the two as the same, and do not carry a compostability claim onto a pack without confirmation.
Can kraft labels be used on food packaging?
On the outside of a pack, routinely — that is where most kraft labelling sits. Direct food contact is a separate question that depends on the specific face, adhesive and any coating, not on kraft as a category. If the label will touch food, or sit on a permeable pack where migration is possible, state that when enquiring so the requirement can be checked rather than assumed.
