Woodfree is the uncoated face stock in the self-adhesive range — chemical pulp, no mineral coating, matt surface. Losing the coating loses some ink gloss and colour punch, and gains something a coated face cannot offer: the surface accepts pen, pencil and stamp, and it takes heat-based printing cleanly. That makes it the default where a label is written on or printed on demand rather than pre-printed in colour. Dispatch and courier labels, warehouse and inventory tags, weigh-scale and price labels, pharmaceutical and clinical labelling, file and box identification, and most direct thermal and thermal transfer label stock is built on a woodfree base. It is the economical choice for plain and single-colour work and the sensible one wherever legibility and writability outrank finish. Like chromo it is a paper face, so it is not waterproof — for wet or outdoor service, move to PVC or vinyl. What is the difference between woodfree and chromo label stock?
The coating. Chromo carries a mineral coating on the face, which gives sharp, saturated colour print and a gloss finish. Woodfree is uncoated, so print is softer and colours read flatter, but the surface takes pen, pencil and stamp and accepts heat-based printing. Chromo for pre-printed colour labels; woodfree for labels written on or printed on demand.
Can you write on woodfree self-adhesive labels with a pen?
Yes — that is the main reason it is specified. The uncoated face absorbs ink, so a ballpoint, marker or rubber stamp dries immediately rather than smearing, and pencil marks cleanly. Coated face stocks resist all three. For dispatch labels, inventory tags, file identification and anything annotated by hand, woodfree is the correct face stock to specify.
Is woodfree label paper suitable for thermal printers?
Woodfree is the base face for most direct thermal and thermal transfer label stock, but the two are not interchangeable. Direct thermal needs a heat-sensitive coating on the face and prints without a ribbon; thermal transfer prints through a ribbon onto plain woodfree. Ordinary uncoated woodfree will not image in a direct thermal printer. State which printer type you run when enquiring.
Is woodfree self-adhesive paper waterproof?
No. It is a paper face with no coating, so it takes up moisture readily, cockles and tears when wet, and thermal or inkjet print can run. It suits dry indoor service — warehouses, offices, pharmacy, retail shelves. Where a label meets water, oil, condensation or the outdoors, move to a film face: PVC for wet indoor use, vinyl for outdoor and long service life.
Which label stock is used for pharmaceutical and logistics labels?
Woodfree, in most cases. Pharmaceutical labelling favours a matt uncoated face because batch numbers and expiry dates are overprinted or written on and have to stay legible; logistics and courier labels are printed on demand from woodfree-based thermal stock.
