What is the difference between coated and uncoated paper?
Coated paper carries a mineral coating that seals the surface, so ink sits on top of the sheet and halftones hold their detail. Uncoated paper has no coating, so ink is absorbed into the fibre — the print reads softer, the sheet is matte, and it can be written on. Coated suits photographic and colour work; uncoated suits reading, writing and anything that will be filled in.
What is woodfree paper?
Woodfree paper is made from chemical pulp with the lignin removed, despite a name that suggests no wood at all. Removing lignin is what stops the sheet yellowing, which is why woodfree grades outlast mechanical papers such as newsprint.
